DÍA MUNDIAL DE LAS FRITURAS

World Fried Food Day

World Fried Food Day: On December 2nd, one of the tastiest and most “guilty pleasure” holidays on the calendar was celebrated: World Fried Food Day… Believe it or not!

This day, dedicated to honoring everything that hits hot oil, is the perfect excuse to enjoy those golden delights we love so much. And even though the date officially passed, who said fried foods need a specific day to be celebrated? From classic tequeños to patacones, empanadas, yuca bites, or spectacular chicharrones, we Venezuelans know how to take our fried treats to the next level.

WHERE DOES WORLD FRIED FOOD DAY COME FROM?

World Fried Food Day has its roots in “Fritters Day,” an unofficial celebration in the United States that exalts the art of frying. Originally, it focused on items like battered vegetables, the famous fried chicken, or even fried ice cream. However, this cooking technique—submerging food in hot fat or oil—is as ancient as it is universal.

Historical records show that frying was already popular in Ancient Egypt to better preserve food. Later, the technique was perfected by Arabic and Mediterranean cultures, who spread it across the globe. As for our beloved Latin America, frying arrived with colonization but was quickly adapted with local ingredients and indigenous techniques, becoming an essential part of our gastronomy.

WHY DO WE LOVE FRIED FOOD SO MUCH?

Let’s start with a big truth: frying isn’t just a technique; it’s culinary magic. Frying transforms food: it makes it crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and enhances its flavors. Moreover, fried foods have the power to create an emotional connection; they are those “happy foods” that accompany us at gatherings, celebrations, and snack times.

In Venezuela, there is no party without tequeños—those cheese sticks wrapped in dough that disappear as fast as they leave the kitchen. Patacones, made with fried green plantains and topped with meat, cheese, or avocado, are another favorite. Yuca bites, whether plain or stuffed with melted cheese or juicy meat, prove that yuca always shines when it hits hot oil. And chicharrón (pork rinds), crispy and full of flavor, is that irresistible snack that never disappoints.

FRIED FOOD IN LATIN AMERICA: TRADITION AND FUN FACTS

Latin America celebrates fried food in all its forms. Every country has its own fried delicacies passed down through generations:

  • Venezuela: Besides tequeños, patacones, fried yuca, and chicharrón, we must highlight empanadas, tajadas, and from the “Beloved Land of the Sun” (Zulia), mandocas or tumbarranchos.
  • Colombia: Buñuelos and fried arepas are classics, especially during festive seasons.
  • Mexico: Fried quesadillas and churros are icons of their street food.
  • Peru: Picarones (sweet potato and squash donuts) are a sweet gem in their gastronomy.
  • Argentina: Fried milanesas accompanied by french fries are a must on any table.

TIPS FOR FRYING AND ENJOYING LIKE AN EXPERT

The first tip is to always have some of our frozen delights in your freezer so you never have to stay craving. Once that’s settled, remember that frying is an art:

  1. Use clean oil: Fresh oil ensures the flavor of the food isn’t altered.
  2. Temperature is key: If it’s too low, the food absorbs more grease; if it’s too high, it might burn without cooking inside.
  3. Always fry from frozen: Ready-to-fry products should go straight from the freezer to the oil. Don’t take them out too early; if they thaw, they won’t be as crispy.
  4. Don’t overcrowd the pan: Frying in small batches ensures even cooking.
  5. Reheat with care: Never use the microwave for fried foods; a pan or an air fryer are your best friends.
